Sleep. One of the most valuable resources the world over, yet so scarce for new parents and parents of young children. If there was only a magic button we could press that would make us feel rested! Until that day comes, we are on our own to get the rest we need as parents and to help our young ones stay on track the best we can. The start of the new year is the perfect time to get your sleep schedule resolutions in order for your little ones! Here are some sleep schedule recommendations for the New Year.

Resolution #1: Make A Clear Distinction Between Daytime And Nighttime

It’s easy to get in the habit of the 24 hour baby wake and feed cycle. To you, day and night may all blur together, but it is important to help prevent that in your baby. Make daytime and nighttime as distinct from each other as possible. This will help your little one establish a more stable and natural sleep/wake rhythm and help them sleep more consistently and longer during the night. Here are some things to keep in mind for separating day and night for your child:

  • Open your curtains and windows as much as you can during the day. You don’t need to go overboard and turn on all the lights in your house, but exposure to natural light during the day is really important.
  • Allow some additional noises during the day. You don’t need to tip toe around the house, but be cognizant of your little one trying to sleep. It’s okay to allow music to softly play in the background and go about your normal daily routine of cleaning and moving about your home. Do the opposite for nighttime. Whisper more and play more soothing music if any music at all and at a quieter volume.
  • Make daytime full of more activities and playtime and nighttime “all about business”. No playing or engagement in activities when it is time for sleep.

Resolution #2: Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

It really does take a “village” to raise a child. This is especially true in the first year. Don’t be afraid to ask close friends and family for help if you need a shift sleeping or help with anything else. Asking for help doesn’t necessarily mean that they need help with the baby. Your helper could simply prepare some meals to stock up on for the week or even grocery shop for you while you care for the baby.

Asking for help may make you feel like “you can’t do it all” by yourself, but it really couldn’t be further from the truth! You asking for help means that you are putting the needs of the baby first. Also, sometimes people are just eagerly waiting to see how they can help you so when you reach out it can really make their day because then they feel needed and valuable. Asking for help is a win win! If you don’t have a friend or family member that can help you in the way you need, then reach out to us!
